Interview With A Wedding Stationer

This week we meet the first of our featured wedding stationers in a brand new series of interviews on the Papermilldirect blog.

Our wedding stationery business advice series has been very popular and we regularly receive emails asking for any help and tips for crafters to make the leap into setting up a stationery business for themselves. We thought you'd all be interested to hear from people who have made that leap and set up a full or part time wedding stationery business.  If you have a stationery business selling handmade wedding invitations and you would like to be featured simply complete this form -Apply to be a featured wedding stationer

Laser Cut Wedding Invitation

This week we meet Sue Norse of Wedding Stationery Direct.  Sue has a wonderful website where couples from all over the UK can order pretty handmade and laser cut wedding stationery in a wide range of designs, colours and styles. She also offers a bespoke wedding stationery service and will create the full range of stationery for the big day, from Save the Date cards to the order of service and the seating plan.

Hi Sue! So how and when did you start making wedding stationery?

I first started making Wedding Stationery in 2008 when a friends’ son asked me to make their wedding invites.  Before then I had been making (and selling) general greeting cards and Christmas cards.  What started as a hobby has grown.  I love working with couples & helping them to design their own unique wedding invitations and stationery.

What have you found most challenging about running a wedding stationery business so far?

The most challenging thing is keeping up with trends.  Like most things these days fashions change so quickly but I love the challenge.

Where do you take inspiration for your designs?

Inspiration is taken from die cutters & embossing folders, the web and clients own ideas.

Do you have a favourite wedding stationery style or trend at the moment?

My favourite trend at the moment is laser cut designs.  These are stunning cards.  Some are so intricate all you need are a few pearls, gems or ribbon.  Similar cards can be created with some of the metal die cutters and I am currently experimenting with some of these.

You make bespoke wedding stationery, what is the most unique or unusual request you have had?

I suppose the most unique theme I was given was a waterside theme.  The couple were getting married at a venue on the river Thames and the groom was a keen rower.  We used the Birdsong embossing folder for the invitations and they had River Birds names as the table names.  My son’s invitations have also been quite challenging.  All I got was a picture with a ‘something like that’ request, but I have learnt to work with wire and eyelets and have had very positive feedback on the finished product from guests.  The Reception theme is also quite challenging and will be top secret until the day!

What tips would you give to a couple planning on making their own wedding stationery?

The biggest tip I would give someone making their own stationery would be ‘keep it simple’.  Don’t give yourself too much of a challenge.  Remember you are making a large number of the same item.

Thank you so much Sue! Wishing you best luck with your business from all at Papermilldirect
