Hi Sylvia here with a tutorial showing how to make two cards using the spotlight technique.

Dsc08237 Spotlight Card

The spotlight area on the card can be achieved by either colouring a small area on a black and white image, or the area you choose to spotlight can be cut out, coloured and mounted over the image with a 3D sticky pad, coloured and mounted onto a slightly larger contrasting coloured card and then attached with a 3D sticky pad or coloured and replaced in the cut out area leaving the card flat.  You can also buy clear plastic domes which can be stuck over a coloured area to highlight it.

Materials used:

  • Papermilldirect 300gsm Smooth White, New Lilac and Pastel Canary card
  • Docraft Urban Stamp Butterflies and Penny Black wood mounted stamp Gathering Together
  • Crealies Crea-Nest-Lies Squares with Dots and Octogons dies
  • Ranger distress inks, blending tool and paint brush
  • Ranger Archival ink - black
  • glue and 3D sticky pads

Dsc08210

Cut out two squares from white card and stamp the image onto each.  Cut a larger square of black card and another larger white square of card for layering.

Dsc08215

Cut out a small area of one stamped image and colour.  You can use just one stamped image if you like as the cut out area will fit over the image to hide the cut out area.  Using two images gives you the choice to cut out two or three areas and choose which one goes best on the card.

Dsc08220

Place the coloured cut out over the image, matching the image details and stick down with a 3D sticky pad.  Layer the image onto the black square then onto the large white square, and finally onto a white card blank.

The following card has three spotlight areas.  Again cut out two white shapes for stamping and larger shapes in canary and new lilac for layering.

Dsc08224

Stamp the image onto the white card and cut out three shapes using small dies and colour them.

Dsc08228

Add the coloured cut outs to the image and layer onto the canary and lilac cards.

Dsc08232

Add to a white card blank to finish.

The possibilities are endless, we would love to see what you make with this technique post your makes on our facebook page so we can see.
